Manipulating an Asset Manager Map in Visio

Following are examples of two ways you might go about enhancing the layout of a map exported from Asset Manager. Using either of these methods, you can approximate a WYSIWYG drawing in Visio from a Asset Manager topology map. See Microsoft: Format a Network Diagram to learn more techniques like these.

  1. Open the .vsdx file you exported from Asset Manager in Visio 2016 or later.
  2. Click Select > Select All.
  3. Drag all to the top left-hand corner.
  4. On the Design Tab, select Re-Layout Page.
  5. Hover your mouse over each of the various layout choices to see how the diagram will be rendered, then choose your preferred layout.

Following is another, more detailed, method to lay out a Asset Manager map in Visio:

  1. Open the vsdx file you exported from Asset Manager in Visio 2016 or later.

  2. Click Show Tabs and Commands in the upper right-hand corner.

  3. Select  Home > Layers > Layer Properties.
  4. Change the Layer color for the Endpoints layer to a color other than the default blue or green already being used for L2 and L3 Network Infrastructure.
  5. Select the check boxes for the Visible column where elements exist (i.e., where the number is not zero).
  6. Optionally, check the boxes for Print column.
  7. Click  Apply, then OK to close the window and return to the drawing.
Endpoints and their paths render in the new color you chose (i.e., red, in this case).
  8. On the Home tab, click Select > Select All.
  9. Drag all to the top left-hand corner.
  1. On the Home tab, click Position > Auto Align & Space.
  2. On the Design tab, click Re-Layout Page.
  3. Hover the mouse over each of the various layout choices to see how the diagram will be rendered, then choose your preferred layout.
  4. Fine-tune the location of any elements as needed by click-dragging nodes to a preferred position.
Your layout is complete. From here, you may want to right-click on a node to display its shape data.
